by Philip Axelrod

Last weekend our team, the Funky Monkeys of Lynbrook High School, attended the Silicon Valley Regional at San Jose State University where our robot's stellar performance helped us advance to the quarterfinals in the elimination rounds. We were excited to win the Judges’ Award in recognition for our our novel "Girl’s Subsystem Challenge,"  that makes it easy for girls to get involved in designing and building our robot. The judges were also impressed by our robot’s robust and capable design.   Eesha Deepak (So.), Divya Pereira (Fr.), Priyanka Pereira (Fr.), Anika Singh (Jr.), and Ria Pradeep (Sr.) proudly display the drivetrain and gearboxes they designed and machined. The competition started early Thursday morning, when the team arrived to prepare the robot for competition. The pit crew worked hard to prepare the robot for competition, assembling the new and reinforced gear mechanism we developed since the Utah regional. ...Read More

CalGames Recap by James Jiao (sophomore) Pictures by Cindy Chan Last weekend, Lynbrook High School’s robotics team, the Funky Monkeys, set out to compete at the WRRF's 2016 CalGames offseason competition. This year’s CalGames was hosted by Fremont High School’s robotics team, the Firebots, and consisted of 36 teams from across the Bay Area. It was a tough competition, but we still managed to battle our way up to the 10th seed in qualifications and made it to the semifinals in the elimination matches. We ended our competition on a high note by being the first pick in alliance selection and by receiving the Autonomous Award for our excellent control system programming that enabled our robot to autonomously shoot a ball into the tower's high goal. The story started even before we arrived at Fremont High School. It was early summer, and we had all wound down after an exciting 2016 season. Our robot had put up a strong performance last ...Read More

Chezy Champs Recap

By James Jiao (sophomore) Last weekend, the Funky Monkeys set out to compete in one of the most competitive offseason in the Bay Area: Chezy Champs, hosted by FIRST Team 254. The monkeys snagged the 11th seed among 41 teams in the qualification matches, advancing to the elimination matches and the quarterfinals. It was a truly successful event, with the entire team working together to skillfully execute our game plan. The adventure began last Friday afternoon. Practice matches started that day, and we got a real taste of the level of competition we were against: FIRST teams 971, 254, 1678, … High level teams were everywhere we looked, shooting high goals every fifteen seconds. We started off little shaky, with new drivers on the field and brand new vision aiming software. Ultimately, we knew we had to pull together as a team and deliver a strong performance, so with our heads held high, we got ready for qualifications the ...Read More

Robonanza 2016

by Yiu-On Li

uploads/media/2016/06/Robonanza_team.jpg
You say banana, I say Robonanza. At the groggy time of 8:30 am on June 22, a time unheard of since the end of the school year, we, the Funky Monkeys, loaded up a truck, packed our bags, and headed to the sixth annual Robonanza. This event was hosted by Intuitive Surgical (not by us, as the banana pun earlier would seem to suggest), a company geared towards the medical robotics industry. Just in case you don't know what Robonanza is, it's a robotics gathering that offers local FIRST teams a chance to show off the robot they built during the year's build season to other teams and Intuitive Surgical employees. This is achieved through a series of polite inquiries and fast-paced matches related to the year's game, FIRST Stronghold. For the (hopefully) few of you that clicked on this post simply because you can't stand the thought of an unread post sitting on the previous page and prefer the tl;dr side of things, then here it is: The weather ...Read More

Lynbrook's Funky Monkeys, FIRST 846, competed at the Silicon Valley FIRST Robotics Regional last weekend, and we showed a lot of improvement since our first competition in Arizona. During the opening ceremonies, we were presented with the UL Safety Animation Award, a national award bestowed on the team for its winning safety animation, right after Amrita Iyer, our Co-Hardware Lead and the rapper in the video, performed live. We were also pleased to receive the Motorola Quality Award that "Celebrates machine robustness in concept and fabrication."  When announcing the award, the judges cited the design of our perfectly counterbalanced arms on our robot and our Girls Subsystem Challenge.  Caption: The Funky Monkeys pose for a photo after winning the Quality Award. After three weeks of coming up with new modifications on the practice robot, our pit crew worked hard on adding those modifications ...Read More

Lynbrook Robotics wins 2016 Safety Animation Award

by Shadaj Laddad

The Funky Monkeys, Lynbrook's Robotics Team, have won the 2016 Safety Animation award. FIRST writes: Congratulations, FRC Team 846, The Funky Monkeys, from San Jose, California, USA, on your winning entry! The Funky Monkeys will be receiving a special UL-designed trophy at one of their events, and their animation will be played at every FRC event this season.  Each year, we compete with other FIRST Robotics teams to produce a 40 second animation about safety.  This year we were asked to use a medieval theme, in keeping with this year's robot game, "Stronghold". The vision and production of our animation was directed by student Brian Lo, and complemented with original music and rap performed by Amrita Iyer.   Break out your headphones; here is the FIRST Robotics announcement and link to our 2016 Safety Animation:Read More

Fleet Week

by Rohan Aren

Fleet Week is an event during October 10th and 11th that showcases military personnel, various tasks done by them, and really cool air shows by the Blue Angels and others. The Funky Monkeys go every year to volunteer and help out with selling concession items and we earn a portion of the profits for the team. Usually, in past years, we’ve volunteered to spend our time at two concession stands. This year we tried something different; instead of volunteering at two concession stands and selling the same things, we volunteered our help to a brat selling vendor by the name of Johnsonville Brats, and one concession stand. We had a team of 9 students, mentors, and parents help out at the grill and the buying station (4 at the grill and 5 at the buying station). We had a ton of customers and it was an exhilarating experience. Even though we had some issues, it was a good team effort all around, as we were able to keep up with the mad rush of customers. Good job all around to everybody who helped ...Read More
